imdb.pl++

Got home from work about 2 hours ago and started coding some more for the IMDB perl script. I got a contribution today from Bret McDanel and he added some awesome features. It now has a pretty XML output as well as several bug fixes. You should get the latest copy if you don’t have it. [link]

Unfortunatly for me, I forgot to release my latest version and his patch didn’t apply as nicely as I would have liked. That’s my fault for having a modified version though. I’ll have to take better care of that in the future. That’s all for now, i’ll try to post more tomorrow..or later tonight. I’m going to nap. Goodnight internets.

Major CLUG Server Update

I was notified moments ago that the room the server is housed in will be emptied next week. The server will be moved next week requiring an IP change. I will make updates concerning the move as I learn more. As far as I know this WILL require an IP change. Please inform all of your users of this unexpected downtime.

UPDATE 2008-06-16
Currently waiting for Clemson to modify the subdomain of the switch port. Expected IP is 24.59. No estimate on time.
UPDATE 2008-06-17
Server was moved, but we have no static IP or ports. I asked about them and was told i would be notifed. I have not received notification so i sent in my own ticket to ithelp@clemson.edu asking for any updates or information they have heard about it. I’ll post responses here.

UPDATE
A couple of emails and phone calls later it looks like the IP 24.59 is resolving. We also may have more ports exposed now, but i have yet to confirm that. If you know someone using our server, please ask them to update their DNS entry to 24.59 and if you are still experiencing problems please notify me.

ruby on rails

I was updating a server today and had to install mongrel for someone. I have to admit it’s much faster than the FCGI extension we were using before.

imdb and perl update

So i’m finally done with exams and now i get to write about this update. I got an email a couple weeks ago from Michele about an update to my imdb perl script. He added an “also known as” functionality to it. Here’s his take on it:

[...]we have the really bad habit to translate movies
and titles. For example, “the godfather”, is translated in “il
padrino”. This is fairly common in Europe.

Here’s a screenshot of the new output,

And a link to the updated perl script. Thanks alot Michele! I’ll post more later if he, or myself, update the script.

Backup Script

Here’s a backup program i wrote for the clemsonlinux server. It uses the dump command to backup a directory in daily and monthly intervals. I’ll modify it more later

Assassin’s Creed, Never Gonna Give You Up

Epic standards war! IE8 I choose you!

A great article about why the entire net is going to be screwed by the IE 8 release. I hope they stick to the idealistic standards and just tell every website to shut the hell up and recode your site. It’ll make everything pretty, and easier to develop for in the future. No more of this If IE bullshit…

ClemsonATM - Update

Now with more IE 7 and IE 8 support! And how!

CUSG Announces Free Music Downloading Service - While participating in a circle jerk

Holy shit wow! Optix/Hub/Tarpix/Mom has been providing you with free music for how many years now?

Let me dissect this for you though. But remember “Brought to you by the CUSG Research and Development
Committee.”

*goes to http://www.ruckus.com*

well fuck..it has automatically playing music ads.
Now i look like an ass because music went off during class.

Make an account, blah blah blah. Activation email, check.

Help keep Ruckus free by checking out these additional offers

No thanks

Help keep Ruckus free by checking out these additional offers

…. are you serious?

Congratulations! You already qualify for a free subscription to Ruckus.
You can start accessing Ruckus’ extensive library of content.
If you have not already done so, download and install the Ruckus Player so you can enjoy playing Ruckus content.

Jesus christ let me go to the damn site already

I would like to point out, at this point it mentions the facebook app AGAIN. I’ll make a quick suggestion to everyone. DO NOT ADD IT. By adding the app you will most likely grant Ruckus access to all your personal information that facebook logs. While facebook terms of service say they will not distribute it, Ruckus’s TOS might say “We will give it out like herpes”. DO NOT ADD THE FACEBOOK ADD

On to the service, and fuck does it play audio with every visit? Damn.
When I do a simple search “imogen heap” i am granted the ability to view more ads joy.
Hm, time to download the player. OH LOOKY HERE

Supported Operating Systems:
Windows XP, SP2 - Windows Media Player 10.0.0.3802 or higher
Windows 2000 - Windows Media Player 9
Windows Media Player 11 required for Ruckus to Go within Ruckus Player

So, XP is officially on death row by Microsoft’s statements and you don’t support Vista? Well with any luck it’ll still run with WMP11 on Vista. Maybe in support mode. So, how many of you own a Mac? HA No music for you suckers!! Let’s see that’s Student Body, times 20%, so yeah screw you ~3,000 people. Oh wait vista shipped this year didn’t it? So..add the freshman class ~4,000 of you now offically got screwed. HA i’m off to get my free music.

Oh, here’s another kicker ;)

Built in mp3 player support for PlaysForSure Subscription mp3 players (requires Ruckus to Go account, PlaysForSure Subscription mp3 player, and Windows Media 11

PlaysForSure? For those of you that don’t know, that means the music is DRM’d. Digital Rights Management, or rather fuck you in the ass without lube. However, this particular assfuck doesn’t come in “Apple” flavor. That’s right, so lets take the 4,000 students you’ve screwed simply because they don’t have an “outdated” computer and add that to the students that have an Ipod of any kind. Congrats, you have just screwed 13,000 students out of “Free” music.

But it’s ok, your research and development group must have known this. They’re filled with all sorts of tech people right?…..right? Oh, fuck you CUSG. Enjoy riding on mommy and daddy’s money while you sit on your own thumb spinning in a chair wondering why your computer is running so slow, is it the all the ads, or the aids you contracted last night fucking your dog. How about you just move your mouse over to this form i’ve created to download free music? All it requires is your name and social security number! Then free music! Seriously, what the fuck CUSG? Did you sit around in a circle jacking each other off and reach this conclusion? Here’s a better solution, everyone on hub and tarpix log on and rape the Ruckus service, strip the DRM and offer it for FREE, the real free, that doesn’t come with all sorts of underline, between the line, over the line, behind the back bullshit TOS.

gg CUSG, gg.

EDIT: Want to really do some good CUSG? Try cutting a deal with itunes. I hate their program but it runs on Win32 and OSX while providing DRM content for Ipods, the majority mp3 player that Clemson students whore out.

IE8 Beta 1

So IE8 Beta 1 was released today and i finally decided to upgrade from IE6. (Fuck you 7!) Anyways, in 7 they changed the AJAX model so i had to recode several things since i was just learning AJAX, but now that IE8 is out..they changed the AJAX model again…Thanks IE. Thanks alot..

I mean it’s great that it renders in standards compliant mode now but now every sites IF IE comments have to account for the dickup that is IE8. And i’m not sure what’s up with the rendering exactly, but it is slow as all hell on my computer. I can see the lag on simple CSS mouse overs.

I thought i’d be happy with IE8 too..maybe when it’s out of beta…
